STORY & REFLECTION
The King Explains with a Wave
King Canute · a published tale
In the King Canute tale, courtiers praise the king as if he can do anything. He has a throne placed by the sea and orders the waves not to reach his feet.
The water comes in anyway. Canute uses what everyone can see to explain that human power has limits. This is a legend, not proof that such a demonstration actually happened.
A good explanation need not be long, but it should let another person follow the reason. If you understand an idea, look for an example that shows how it works.
Close the book and explain one topic in your own words. If you can only repeat the original sentence, return to the step in the reasoning that you cannot yet describe.
