STORY & REFLECTION

Johnson & Johnson rebuilt trust by putting safety first

The 1982 Tylenol crisis

In 1982, people in the Chicago area died after taking Tylenol capsules that a criminal had contaminated with cyanide after manufacture. Consumers could not know which bottle was safe, and trust in the brand collapsed rapidly. Although the company had not poisoned the medicine, frightened people needed protection more than a corporate defense.

Johnson & Johnson warned the public, stopped advertising, and recalled Tylenol nationwide. It later returned the product with multiple layers of tamper-evident packaging. The response was costly but aligned with the company's Credo, which placed those who use its products first. Customers could observe protective action instead of hearing only assurances of concern.

Trust did not return because of one sentence. It returned through decisions: communicate necessary information, reduce danger, accept short-term loss, and redesign the system so the same harm was harder to repeat. We cannot command another person to trust us, but we can create enough evidence for them to reconsider gradually.

If trust in a relationship has shaken, do not begin by asking the other person to stop being cautious. Begin with a small, measurable promise. State what you will do, do it on time, and admit when you cannot. Repair may be slow and the other person retains a choice, but steady, transparent behavior is the part you can own.
