Fortune #01

Good fortune

This is a gentle season for starting something small you have put off. Progress may be quiet rather than flashy, yet it will rest on solid ground. Move calmly, and good openings will arrive in their own time.

STORY & REFLECTION

IKEA did not begin with a house full of furniture

Ingvar Kamprad · IKEA

In 1943, Ingvar Kamprad was only seventeen when he registered IKEA. The first version was not a vast furniture showroom. It was a mail-order business selling small goods that he could source and deliver. Furniture came later, after the business had gained experience and learned more clearly what customers needed.

The useful part of this story is the size of the first step. Kamprad did not wait for a factory, abundant capital, or a flawless master plan. He began with what was possible, learned from real orders, and gradually improved design, packing, and delivery. A large ambition became a series of smaller questions that could actually be answered.

Starting small did not make the vision smaller. It created room to test without risking everything at once. A weak product could be changed, an awkward process could be redesigned, and each lesson could guide the next expansion. The global brand grew from actions that were ordinary enough to repeat.

This story does not promise that every small project becomes a global company. It offers something more practical: you do not need to see the entire road before beginning. Choose a step small enough for today, let it produce one piece of real information, and use that information to choose what comes next. Clarity often follows action rather than preceding it.
