STORY & REFLECTION
Warren Buffett reads value before excitement
Warren Buffett · Berkshire Hathaway
In his 1996 shareholder letter, Warren Buffett carefully separated market price from intrinsic value. A rising price did not necessarily mean that the underlying business had improved proportionally. Berkshire's acquisition thinking examined business economics, management quality, and acceptable terms rather than relying on the excitement surrounding a deal.
A pause was therefore built into Buffett's method. Before accepting an opportunity, he needed to understand what was being bought, how it earned money, where risk sat, and how price related to value. He sometimes decided quickly when clear information met prepared criteria, but that speed came after a framework, not from fear that someone else would act first.
The principle applies beyond investing. A job offer, major purchase, or partnership may arrive wrapped in urgency. Excitement highlights the immediate benefit while pushing costs, exit terms, and sacrifices into the background. One night of distance allows the mind to compare the offer with an actual need.
Before answering, write three lines: what do I receive, what do I assume, and which facts remain unknown? If the explanation still relies heavily on “probably,” ask another question. A pause does not mean you lack courage to seize an opportunity. It means you respect the opportunity enough to see both its promise and its responsibilities.
