Caution
Pride may make us cling to old words even when we know they need adjusting. Choose kindness and relationship over winning. An apology or partial admission can make the heart lighter.

STORY & REFLECTION
When KFC had no chicken, the brand chose an apology without excuses
KFC UK · The 2018 FCK apology
In February 2018, a distribution breakdown left many KFC restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland without chicken. Numerous locations temporarily closed. For a brand whose name and main product are tied to chicken, the failure was embarrassing and directly affected customers, employees, and franchise owners. Pretending nothing had happened would have weakened trust further.
KFC and its agency, Mother, published an advertisement showing an empty bucket with the letters KFC rearranged as “FCK,” followed by a direct apology to customers, team members, and restaurants. The ad did not call the problem small, demand understanding, or ask everyone to forget it. It acknowledged that the situation should not have happened, said work was underway, and promised updates.
Humor helped people open themselves to the message, but the joke was not the foundation. The foundation was admitting reality before defending the brand's image. KFC could not return the meals people had missed, but it could avoid a second injury—the feeling that the responsible party did not recognize the effect. An apology gains weight when it names the failure, sees the affected person, and is followed by visible repair.
If you know you made a mistake, try three sentences without adding “but”: what I did, how it affected you, and what I will repair. If the complete solution is not yet known, state the first step and when you will return with an update. Lowering pride for a moment does not make you smaller. It tells the other person that the relationship matters more than preserving an image of never being wrong.
