They agree on a brief lunchtime update and a real conversation after work. For emergencies, they choose a reachable school contact. Silence during class now has a known meaning.
Cornell's guide to long-distance relationships recommends discussing contact expectations while maintaining an individual life. Message volume alone is therefore a poor measure of closeness when the rhythm makes one person feel monitored.
An agreed rhythm does not stop people missing each other. It can keep a time gap from acquiring a false meaning.
