Mixed — reflect carefully
A loved one's concern may contain useful information without being a verdict on your life. Ask for concrete events and separate concern from labels.

STORY & REFLECTION
Criticism that did not become a verdict
Research-based illustration · Hearing concerns from loved ones
Illustrative scene: A friend calls someone's partner “selfish.” The person feels angry at once because one word seems to judge the whole relationship.
Asked what happened, the friend describes three important plans canceled without warning. Now there are events to examine and discuss with the partner instead of accepting or rejecting a label.
Gottman's Four Horsemen framework shows how criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling erode conversation. A concern from a partner or family member may contain useful information, but facts still need to be separated from attacks on character.
A concern tied to events helps identify what to discuss. A label tends to put everyone on the defensive.
Reflection
Feedback should be separated from personal attack.
A small action today
Ask for a specific behavior rather than a broad label.
A question to reflect on
Which concern contains facts worth hearing, and which part is only a label?
