STORY & REFLECTION
A password is not proof of love
Research-based illustration · Monitoring and device access without consent
Illustrative scene: Someone notices that their partner knows every time they visit a friend, although they never said where they were going. Location sharing is enabled on an account without their knowledge.
They do not rush to change everything on a device that may be monitored. From a safer channel, they contact a trusted person and plan how to review the account. Protecting data includes protecting oneself.
The Hotline explains that technology can be used to monitor messages, locations, accounts, and devices as a means of control. Demanding passwords or opening a phone without permission does not build trust; it crosses a privacy boundary.
If you suspect monitoring, first consider which device is safe for seeking help. An immediate password change is not always the safest first move.
Reflection
