Fortune #13
Good fortune
A blank page can make an assignment feel larger than it is. Put down a rough outline first, then improve it once you can see what is missing; the first draft is a place to think.

STORY & REFLECTION
The Spider Who Tried Another Thread
Robert Bruce · a traditional tale
In a traditional tale, Robert Bruce hides after several defeats. He watches a spider try to stretch a thread from one beam to another, failing again and again.
The spider eventually secures the thread, and Bruce takes heart. This is an encouraging legend, not evidence that a spider caused his later success.
A first draft does not need to reach the far beam at once. It lets you see what is missing and where to revise. Revision is part of the work, not proof that you lack ability.
Write three rough headings before polishing any sentence. Once something is on the page, you can choose one place to improve instead of waiting for a perfect opening.
Reflection
A first draft exists so revision has somewhere to begin.
A small action today
Write a three-point outline before polishing sentences.
A question to reflect on
If the first draft can be rough, what heading would you write first?
