Fortune #32
Mixed — reflect carefully
Feeling familiar with the material is not the same as recalling it in an exam. Try a past question without notes for ten minutes; the gap gives your remaining study time a direction.

STORY & REFLECTION
The Practice Test That Revealed a Gap
Retrieval practice · review of learning research
Imagine a learner whose exam book looks entirely familiar. Yet on a closed-book past paper, they cannot explain why an answer works. This is an illustrative scene about the gap between reading and responding.
A research review finds practice testing and spaced study useful across many settings, while rereading alone has less consistent benefit. A gap found in practice is information you can use before the real exam.
A missed practice question need not cause panic. If time remains, it can point you to a topic to revisit and attempt again, instead of trusting the feeling of familiarity.
Try ten minutes of a past paper without notes. Sort misses into “could not recall” and “used the wrong reasoning.” Those gaps may need different kinds of practice.
