STORY & REFLECTION
The Golden Axe Was Not His
Mercury and the Workmen · Aesop's fable
A workman drops his axe into a river. In the fable, Mercury shows him a golden axe and a silver one, but the workman says his own was made of iron.
Another man hears the tale, deliberately drops his axe, and claims the golden one. He loses both the reward and his own tool. The fable uses rewards to distinguish an honest answer from a false claim.
Copying another person's assignment can fill the page while hiding which steps you can do. It also makes it harder for a teacher to help at the right point.
Do the portion you can manage yourself and write a question beside the place you get stuck. Honesty in practice does not require you to be skilled already; it gives learning a way forward.
Reflection
Honest learning begins by naming where you are stuck.
A small action today
Write what you can do yourself and ask for help with the gap.
A question to reflect on
What can you complete yourself, and where should you ask for help?
