Mixed — reflect carefully

A crowded schedule may push you to decide too quickly. You may rest or postpone something without guilt. Once your body rests, many urgent matters will look more manageable.

STORY & REFLECTION

Shackleton turned back only ninety-seven miles from the Pole

Ernest Shackleton · The Nimrod expedition

On the Nimrod expedition, Ernest Shackleton and his companions reached a point only ninety-seven miles from the South Pole. On January 9, 1909, the goal was close enough that turning around could look like failure. Supplies were falling, however, and pressing forward risked starvation on the return.

Shackleton turned back. The journey to base still took three harrowing months, but deciding before it was too late saved their lives. He did not reach the Pole, yet returned with a record for the farthest south at that time and was celebrated. A sound decision does not always make an event end according to its first plan.

When exhausted, the mind sees the cost already spent: after coming this far, how can I stop? A crowded schedule and other people's expectations add pressure to answer quickly. Shackleton considered the cost still ahead. Retreat preserved the ability to return home and have a tomorrow; it did not erase the value of the distance already traveled.

If you are about to decide while depleted, postpone what can wait and care for the body first. Ask what risk increases if you force the next step, and what information one rested night might clarify. You do not have to collapse before earning permission to change a plan. One step back may preserve your ability to take another journey.
