Caution
An easy shortcut may hide costs or risks. Choose the transparent route even if it takes longer. Temporary convenience is not worth a long-term problem.

STORY & REFLECTION
Domino's put the criticism on the table and changed the pizza
Domino's · The 2009 recipe overhaul
In late 2009, Domino's faced blunt criticism that its pizza was flavorless or tasted like cardboard. The easier shortcut would have been new advertising, prettier language, or a selection of only favorable comments. Instead, the company used real criticism in its campaign and acknowledged that its central product needed to change.
The team did not stop with an apology. Domino's rebuilt its hand-tossed pizza with a seasoned crust, a more robust sauce, and a different cheese blend, then introduced the recipe with a satisfaction guarantee. This was harder than changing an image because recipes, ingredients, training, and operations across many stores had to move together.
Transparency here did not mean publishing everything or performing humiliation. It meant making words comparable with action. Domino's said it had listened, then showed changes that addressed the problem customers described. Once the cause was being repaired, advertising became an invitation to test the claim rather than a shortcut asking for trust before evidence existed.
When a method looks unusually easy, ask whether it fixes the cause or merely hides the symptom. Choose steps that another person can examine: state conditions clearly, keep a decision record, test on a small scale, and let actual results reveal what needs correction. A transparent path may be slower on its first day, but it avoids the continuing cost of secrets, excuses, and the same problem returning.
