On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused an order to surrender her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery. The remembered image is of one woman sitting quietly, but the act was not a momentary response to tiredness. Her arrest helped ignite the Montgomery Bus Boycott. About 17,000 Black residents collectively avoided the buses for more than a year. A court ruling and sustained economic pressure eventually forced the city to desegregate its buses.

Parks's confidence was not measured by volume. She knew the principle on which she stood and accepted the consequences of remaining in place.
