Fortune #05

Good fortune

You do not need to carry everything alone. A friend or someone close is ready to help if you share what you are facing. Accept that care and return it when you can.

STORY & REFLECTION

Helen Keller did not open the world alone

Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan

Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing after an illness at nineteen months. Her family loved her but did not know how to build a reliable language with her. On March 3, 1887, twenty-year-old teacher Anne Sullivan arrived. Sullivan had endured poverty and serious vision problems herself; she did not enter Keller's life as a person untouched by difficulty.

Sullivan began spelling letters into Helen's palm and connecting tactile patterns to physical objects. At first Helen could imitate the patterns without understanding that they were words. Learning required boundaries, patience, and affection. The famous experience with water helped Helen grasp that the signs in her hand carried meaning, and a previously closed world began to acquire names.

This was neither a helper doing everything for someone nor a learner succeeding alone. Sullivan developed a path of access; Keller did the demanding work of learning. Their long partnership supported Keller as she studied, wrote, and advocated for disabled people. Good help did not diminish her ability. It gave that ability a way to emerge.

Your burden may not require someone to solve everything for you. It may need a person who can ask a question, divide a step, or remain nearby while you try again. A specific request for help does not declare, “I cannot do this.” It says, “I still want to continue, and I am looking for a better tool.”
