Fortune #19
Good fortune
A small promise matters when you keep it. If you cannot, say so early and take responsibility instead of leaving someone waiting.

STORY & REFLECTION
The small promise that returned on time
Research-based illustration · Trust when words match actions
Illustrative scene: Someone promises to pick up their partner after a medical appointment. Work changes that morning, and they almost hope the partner will find their own way home.
They call early and help arrange transport the partner agrees to. The original promise cannot be kept, but the other person is not left alone with the problem at the last minute.
Gottman's sliding-door idea treats trust as the accumulation of small choices. Calling back as promised, giving notice when plans change, and following through offer repeated evidence that a person can be relied upon.
Reliability does not mean never failing. It includes telling the truth early enough for the other person to make another plan.
