STORY & REFLECTION
Intimacy that can stop at any moment
Research-based illustration · Specific and reversible consent
Illustrative scene: A couple begins an intimate moment. One says they want to stop; the other replies, “Why stop now?” and tries to make them feel guilty.
The person who wants to stop may move away without negotiating or giving a long explanation. If the other person will not stop, this is a safety concern for which trusted support matters.
RAINN stresses that consent is specific, ongoing, and reversible. Prior intimacy, relationship status, or agreement to one activity does not automatically authorize another, so pausing to ask and listen is part of intimacy itself.
If “stop” is not respected, that is not a minor misunderstanding. Your safety matters more than satisfying the other person.
Reflection
Consent must be freely given and reversible.
