STORY & REFLECTION
Trust built in an ordinary minute
Research-based illustration · Small moments of choosing to respond
Illustrative scene: Two partners agree to call before bed. One gets caught in urgent work and knows the call will not happen, so they send a brief message before the agreed time and suggest a new one.
The missed call does not become unexplained silence. The other partner confirms that tomorrow works, and both follow through. Trust grows from telling the truth while there is still room to adjust.
Gottman uses the image of a sliding-door moment in which a person can turn toward or away from a partner. Trust therefore grows through repeated ordinary responses and follow-through, not only through one dramatic promise.
One missed appointment is not the whole relationship. Advance notice and follow-through on the new plan tell you more.
