Fortune #18
Good fortune
Recognizing a word on a list is different from using it. Put new vocabulary into sentences about your own life; if a sentence feels wrong, check an example before adding more words.

STORY & REFLECTION
When a Fine Word Needs a Real Meaning
The Caliph and the Poet · a published tale
In a published tale, a poet recites for a caliph. Asked to choose between gold and wise advice, he chooses advice because it sounds like the answer that will please his ruler.
The advice turns out to concern a worn cloak and oil in a beard. The poet asks for the gold instead, and the caliph laughs and rewards him. The humor lies between a grand-sounding word and what is actually wanted.
Vocabulary can have a similar gap. You may know an elegant translation but not where a word belongs in a sentence or what tone it carries. Usable meaning needs context.
Choose one new word and put it in a sentence from your own life. Compare it with a reliable example. If it sounds odd, study the context before adding another word.
