Fortune #10

In 1928, Alexander Fleming was studying staphylococcus bacteria when a culture dish became contaminated with mold. Around the mold was an area where bacteria had been destroyed or prevented from growing. The dish could have looked like a ruined experiment. Fleming instead paused over the anomaly and asked why an unintended result had occurred.

He did not declare an answer from a single observation. Fleming varied conditions and learned that the antibacterial substance was not produced by every mold. Other scientists, especially the Oxford team, later had to isolate penicillin and find ways to produce enough for treatment. The medical breakthrough combined chance, careful observation, and the accumulated work of many people.

The lesson is not to wait for a magical accident. It is to avoid deciding too quickly that what is in front of us has no value. A failed experiment may contain information, unwelcome feedback may expose a gap, and a disappointing day may raise a question the original plan never asked. Some opportunities first resemble inconvenience.

Look at one thing that departed from your plan today without forcing it to become a positive story immediately. Ask only: what actually happened, and what can it teach me? Gratitude does not require denying disappointment. It can mean recognizing that, even within disappointment, you can still collect information and choose your next response.
