STORY & REFLECTION
Katherine Johnson turned mathematics on paper into a path through space
Katherine Johnson · NASA
Katherine Johnson loved mathematics from childhood, graduated with highest honors, and first worked as a teacher. She later learned that NACA, NASA's predecessor, was hiring Black women mathematicians to process flight data. She carried knowledge from the classroom into problems for which no finished textbook procedure yet existed.
Johnson analyzed the trajectory for Alan Shepard and worked on John Glenn's 1962 orbital mission. Electronic computers were newly central to the calculations, and Glenn asked for Johnson to run the same numbers by hand before he would fly. Her results confirmed them. Her later work supported Apollo and backup research used in Apollo 13's return.
Her value was not merely the number of formulas she remembered. She knew what to ask, how to test an assumption, and how to turn mathematics into a real decision. New knowledge does not need to wait until we know everything. It grows stronger when applied to a real problem and followed by more learning where gaps appear.
Choose a small task that lets you use what you are learning and still repair mistakes. Produce one answer, then inspect what worked and what requires another question. You do not have to prove that you are already an expert. Applying knowledge carefully is how a reader gradually becomes a practitioner.
