STORY & REFLECTION
A direct question that stopped the guessing
Research-based illustration · Uncertainty and two-way communication
Illustrative scene: One partner says, “I need some quiet lately.” The other hears, “I want distance from us,” and withdraws without asking.
They finally ask, “Do you mean tonight, or do you want to talk about our relationship?” The partner has a headache and needs rest. The answer does not solve everything, but it stops a new problem created by guessing.
Planned Parenthood places communication and honesty among the foundations of healthy relationships. When feelings are uncertain, an open question produces better information than interpreting every signal through one's own fear.
One clear question can save hours of interpretation, even if the answer is not the one you hoped for.
Reflection
