Mixed — reflect carefully
A pause in an argument can help when you say when you will return. Silence with no end can deepen anxiety.

STORY & REFLECTION
The conversation that returned at a better time
Research-based illustration · The rhythm of pausing and repair
Illustrative scene: During a discussion about rent, one partner becomes overwhelmed and walks out. The other does not know whether the issue has been abandoned.
On returning, they explain the need to calm down and agree to say next time, “I need thirty minutes, then I will come back.” A break becomes an agreement, not a punishment by disappearance.
Gottman describes repair as having a rhythm. A pause can reduce overwhelm, but it becomes safer when partners state when they will return, so silence is not used as punishment or escape.
A pause helps when there is a route back to the conversation. Without one, silence may become another injury.
Reflection
Restarting a talk needs readiness, not a winner.
A small action today
Ask for a time to talk without reopening everything at once.
A question to reflect on
If you need a pause, how will you say when and how you will return?
