STORY & REFLECTION
A repair phrase before anyone felt fully calm
Research-based illustration · Attempts to limit harm during conflict
Illustrative scene: A disagreement about visiting family turns sarcastic. One partner hears their own voice sharpening and almost brings up something they know will hurt.
They stop and say, “That was sarcasm. I am sorry. Can I start again?” The other is not instantly calm, but the exchange need not create a new wound before they return to the plans.
Gottman calls words or gestures that lower tension repair attempts, such as asking to start again, admitting a harsh tone, or requesting a pause. They do not erase the problem; they limit further harm so understanding can become possible.
A repair phrase is not a button that makes hurt vanish. It stops adding fuel before the conversation continues.
