STORY & REFLECTION
A question that produced usable feedback
Guidance-based illustration · A question that produced usable feedback
Illustrative scene: A report writer asks a colleague, “What do you think?” and hears, “It is okay.” They still do not know what to revise before submission.
Next time they ask, “Is the conclusion clear on page one? Which sentence slows you down?” The colleague identifies two spots, and the conversation stays about the document rather than personal ability.
OPM advises feedback tied to a situation, behavior, and impact rather than vague calls to “communicate better.” A concrete example makes improvement easier to act on.
Useful feedback need not be long. It should name something the recipient can change and check again.
Reflection
Feedback works best when tied to actual work.
A small action today
Ask a colleague what one deliverable could improve.
A question to reflect on
Which piece of work would benefit from one concrete example of feedback?
